Day 19: Virgin Most Powerful

Prayer by St. Thomas Aquinas:

O most blessed and most sweet Virgin Mary full of mercy,
to thy compassion I recommend my soul and body, my thoughts, actions, life and death.
O my Lady, help and strengthen me against the snares of the devil;
obtain me true and perfect love with which to love thy most beloved Son and my Lord Jesus Christ with my whole heart, and after Him to love thee above all things.
My Queen and Mother, by thy most powerful intercession,
grant that I may persevere in this love until death
and after death be conducted by thee to the kingdom of the blessed.

St. Alphonsus Liguori from The Glories of Mary:

"Virgo potens:" Virgin most powerful. And who among the saints is so powerful with God as his most holy mother ? She obtains whatever she wishes, as St. Bernard has said: It is enough that thou dost wish, and all things are done: "Velis tu et omnia fient." St. Peter Damian even says that when Mary asks graces from God she does not pray, but in a certain manner commands. Thus the Son honors this mother whom he loves so much, by granting her whatever she asks, even favors for sinners. Hence St. Germanus says: Thou art the mother of God, omnipotent to save sinners, and thou hast no need of any other recommendation with God, for thou art the mother of true life. Oh, Mary the a canst make me holy; in thee I trust.

Day 18: Virgin Most Renowned

By St. John Henry Newman

Mary is the “Virgo Prædicanda,” the Virgin who is to be Proclaimed

MARY is the Virgo Prædicanda, that is, the Virgin who to be proclaimed, to be heralded, literally, to be preached.

We are accustomed to preach abroad that which is wonderful, strange, rare, novel, important. Thus, when our Lord was coming, St. John the Baptist preached Him; then, the Apostles went into the wide world, and preached Christ. What is the highest, the rarest, the choicest prerogative of Mary? It is that she was without sin. When a woman in the crowd cried out to our Lord, “Blessed is the womb that bare Thee!” He answered, “More blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it.” Those words were fulfilled in Mary. She was filled with grace in order to be the Mother of God. But it was a higher gift than her maternity to be thus sanctified and thus pure. Our Lord indeed would not have become her son unless He had first sanctified her; but still, the greater blessedness was to have that perfect sanctification. This then is why she is the Virgo Prædicanda; she is deserving to be preached abroad because she never committed any sin, even the least; because sin had no part in her; because, through the fulness of God’s grace, she never thought a thought, or spoke a word, or did an action, which was displeasing, which was not most pleasing, to Almighty God; because in her was displayed the greatest triumph over the enemy of souls. Wherefore, when all seemed lost, in order to show what He could do for us all by dying for us; in order to show what human nature, His work, was capable of becoming; to show how utterly He could bring to naught the utmost efforts, the most concentrated malice of the foe, and reverse all the consequences of the Fall, our Lord began, even before His coming, to do His most wonderful act of redemption, in the person of her who was to be His Mother. By the merit of that Blood which was to be shed, He interposed to hinder her incurring the sin of Adam, before He had made on the Cross atonement for it. And therefore it is that we preach her who is the subject of this wonderful grace.

But she was the Virgo Prædicanda for another reason. When, why, what things do we preach? We preach what is not known, that it may become known. And hence the Apostles are said in Scripture to “preach Christ.” To whom? To those who knew Him not—to the heathen world. Not to those who knew Him, but to those who did not know Him. Preaching is a gradual work: first one lesson, then another. Thus were the heathen brought into the Church gradually. And in like manner, the preaching of Mary to the children of the Church, and the devotion paid to her by them, has grown, grown gradually, with successive ages. Not so much preached about her in early times as in later. First she was preached as the Virgin of Virgins—then as the Mother of God—then as glorious in her Assumption—then as the Advocate of sinners—then as Immaculate in her Conception. And this last has been the special preaching of the present century; and thus that which was earliest in her own history is the latest in the Church’s recognition of her.

Day 17: Virgin Most Venerable

. "Virgo veneranda:" Virgin most venerable. St. Anselm declares, that when we say of Mary that she is the mother of God, we say that she surpasses in greatness, after God, every thing that can be conceived or expressed whence he says to her: Oh Lady, nothing is equal to thee for every thing is either above thee,

and that is God; or it is beneath thee, and that is every thing that is not God. In a word, St. Bernardine says that God alone can know the greatness of Mary; and the blessed Albertus Magnus affirms that Mary could not be more united to God except by becoming God. "Magis Deo conjungi non potuit, nisi fieret Deus." Truly worthy then of our veneration is this great mother of God, for God himself could not make her greater than he has done, by making her his mother. Oh, mother of God, and my mother, Mary, I adore thee, and would wish thee to be adored by all hearts, as that exalted Lady thou art. Have mercy on a poor sinner, who loves thee and trusts in thee. Virgin most venerable, pray for us: "Virgo veneranda, ora pro nobis."

Day 16: Virgin Most Prudent

 +

Dear Mother of Our Savior,
Please pray to your Son for me and all who read this that each of us may grow in the virtue of holy prudence.  Please pray that we will keep before us the goodness of the one, true, God, see what is wrong and what is right, even see what is best, and be given the grace to act towards the highest good.  May we be prudent in all things both temporal and spiritual,

Day 15 : Mother of Our Savior

One of the most obvious to be understood titles of Our Lady is Mother of Our Savior.  The Protestants. and other heretics, would have you think that Our Lady's role left when our Lord became independent, but this ignores both the old and new testaments.  Her dignity as mother came because God the Father knew in advance that He would make a New Eve for His only son, that by her free will in cooperation with the graces given to her, she would teach to the world the commands that brought about the beginning of Christ's public ministry, "Do whatever he tells you."  Her humility brought forth Salvation through her son,  and crushes the head of the serpent.  We need not fear to approach Christ if we go through his Mother, who will intercede on our behalf.  But let us not forget the dignity owed to her by this role in the history of man and the means through which the Redeemer comes:  Mother of Our Savior.

Day 14: Mother of Our Creator

 +JMJ+

MATER CREATORIS

"THIS is a title which, of all others, we should have thought it impossible for any creature to possess. At first sight we might be tempted to say that it throws into confusion our primary ideas of the Creator and the creature, the Eternal and the temporal, the Self-subsisting and the dependent; and yet on further consideration we shall see that we cannot refuse the title to Mary without denying the Divine Incarnation -- that is, the great and fundamental truth of revelation, that God became man.

And this was seen from the first age of the Church. Christians were accustomed from the first to call the Blessed Virgin "The Mother of God," because they saw that it was impossible to deny her that title without denying St. John's words, "The Word" (that is, God the Son) "was made flesh."

And in no long time it was found necessary to proclaim this truth by the voice of an Ecumenical Council of the Church. For, in consequence of the dislike which men have of a mystery, the error sprang up that our Lord was not really God, but a man, differing from us in this merely -- that God dwelt in Him, as God dwells in all good men, only in a higher measure; as the Holy Spirit dwelt in Angels and Prophets, as in a sort of Temple; or again. as our Lord now dwells in the Tabernacle in church. And then the bishops and faithful people found there was no other way of hindering this false, bad view being taught but by declaring distinctly, and making it a point of faith, that Mary was the Mother, not of man only, but of God. And since that time the title of Mary, as Mother of God. has become what is called a dogma, or article of faith, in the Church.

But this leads us to a larger view of the subject. Is this title as given to Mary more wonderful than the doctrine that God, without ceasing to be God, should become man? Is it more mysterious that Mary should be Mother of God, than that God should be man? Yet the latter, as I have said, is the elementary truth of revelation, witnessed by Prophets, Evangelists, and Apostles all through Scripture. And what can be more consoling and joyful than the wonderful promises which follow from this truth, that Mary is the Mother of God? -- the great wonder, namely, that we become the brethren of our God; that, if we live well, and die in the grace of God, we shall all of us hereafter be taken up by our Incarnate God to that place where angels dwell; that our bodies shall be raised from the dust, and be taken to Heaven; that we shall be really united to God; that we shall be partakers of the Divine nature; that each of us, soul and body, shall be plunged into the abyss of glory which surrounds the Almighty; that we shall see Him, and share His blessedness, according to the text, 'Whosoever shall do the will of My Father that is in Heaven, the same is My brother, and sister, and mother.'"

Day 13: Mother of Good Counsel

+JMJ+

Our Lady, the Mother  of God the Son, is given the name, Mother of Good Counsel, as she provides counsel to her children who seek to obey the one, true God in the one, true religion.  It is a mystical reality that can never be spoken of enough, yet, often, the pious are very careful to mention that they enjoy this privilege.  There is a evidence that the inspiration of such counsel is truly from her when it demonstrates holy obedience.  Holy obedience is the "fiat" to God, and one that places  Him above all things, and secondly, to neighbor out of that first love.  In loving God, it loves the Bride of Christ, and sees to build up the Church and not destroy, by defending its teachings, and giving true honor to God through due worship handed down by sacred tradition.

Ite Mariae.

Day 12: Mother Most Admirable

+JMJ+

Mater Admirabilis is a fresco depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary in the monastery of the Trinità dei Monti , in Rome. It was painted by a young French artist, Pauline Perdrau, and has been associated with several miracles.

Legend has it that Pauline asked the nuns at the Trinità dei Monti to paint a mural of the Blessed Virgin Mary. After weeks of painting, she finally finished her work. When the Mother Superior saw it, she said the colors were too bright and bold and immediately covered it with a large piece of fabric.

Years later, Pope Pius IX was visiting the church and questioned what was behind the cloth. The Mother Superior tried to distract the Pope from it, but he demanded to see it. When he drew back the fabric, it revealed what Pauline had painted years before, the colours having fading and blended together to create a much softer image. The Pope declared her Mater Admirabilis, “Mother Most Admirable”.

Pope Leo XII offered the church and monastery of the Trinità dei Monti to the Religious of the Sacred Heart. Perdrau, born in 1817, who would later become a Religious of the Sacred Heart, painted the fresco in 1844 during her postulancy. It was blessed under the name Mater Admirabilis by Pope Pius IX on October 20, 1846. October 20 is the feast of Mater Admirabilis in the Roman Catholic Church, as observed by the Society of the Sacred Heart.

Day 11: Mother Most Amiable

 +JMJ+

Mater Admirabilis The Pink Madonna found in Convent of the Sacred Heart Schools around the world.
"FULL OF  GRACE" and fixed on God and His goodness, you are our Mother Most Amiable, responding to the needs of sinners who calls upon you.  Your kindness is never out done.  Most generous Queen, we are reminded by the apostle, by the promptings of your Mystical Spouse the Holy Ghost, that you came to the intercession of the couple at their wedding feast, even beginning your Son's public ministry. Your affection for the souls that God the Son, your Son, suffered and died for on the Cross,  even from Heaven.  Mother Most amiable, you intercede for the sake of the souls of those who call upon you, after it was  our sins which were the cause of your sons suffering and death.  So merciful, generous, kind, doting, and gentle you remain, that no soul has sins so great that they should not come to ask for your intercession.  And like at the Wedding Feast, your intercession is what brings about the "new wine" converting souls.

We call upon your aide to convert our souls from any habits that are impeding us from greater graces.  May we be inspired by your kind nature and glorify God by imitating you in little ways and that we may offer all our good works, sufferings, joys, and all that has been given to us, to Christ through your prayers, for the glory of God and the conversion of sinners.  Amen.

Day 10: Mother Undefiled

+JMJ+

Not only is Our Lady without sin, but she is also of entire purity of mind.  This is in the full sense of the meaning of the word as well.  Both her intellect and imagination were always set to the light of reason and Divine Law. Therefore, she is without any vice and her will always remained perfectly ordered to God.  This is why she is the "Seat of Wisdom", because she has a special insight into the higher realities in every situation.

And while the old Eve presented a forbidden fruit to Adam, the New Eve presents  the Divine Fruit of her sacred womb.

Day 9: Mother Inviolate

 +JMJ+

One of the mysterious considerations we have of the Blessed Mother of God is celebrated by the title, Mother Inviolate.  Not only does it pronounce her perpetual virginity, but it emphasizes that this virginity remained even at the birth of Christ.  This is very important to consider for many reasons, because we know the dignity of Christ more fully  by better consideration of this miracle. We also learn of  how terrific an intimidation she is to the devil, who is frightened by this fact, as he is both at once shamed and powerless to her integrity.  Whenever this one, human person of perfect integrity comes to the aide, by just her prayers, of any sinner, the devils are powerless.  She is incomparable and inconquerable, and our defender, even of our own disbelief and any hardness due to the effects of sin.  Our Mystical Witness of perfect integrity, reigns at the same time from Heaven and on earth, by her prayers.  For who she is by the design of God the Father, by cooperation to God the Holy Ghost, she was able to bear God the Son and still today, continues to be the conduit of all graces.  We, who have been blessed to witness the effects of her intercession, all those who call upon her in earnest, are inspired to live changed lives, with a Faith that defies our first self-inclinations.  To know her is to be given the inspiration and grace to abide in the Commandments and to find ourselves with a peace that God gives through this mysterious, mystical means.

Mother Inviolate, pray for us.

Day 8: Mother Most Chaste

 +JMJ+

Under the Old Law there were two precepts concerning the birth of first-born sons. One was that the mother was regarded as unclean and was to remain in her house for forty days and then purify herself in the Temple. The other was that the parents of the first-born son should take him to the Temple and offer him there to God.

Unidentified Peruvian Artist, Mater Castissima, 1776, oil on canvas, collection of Carl & Marilynn Thoma.
On the day of Her purification, the Blessed Virgin carried out both these precepts. Although She was not bound by the law of purification since She was still a virgin and was absolutely pure, Immaculate, nevertheless Her humility and sense of obedience made Her wish to go and purify Herself like other mothers.

At the same time, She fulfilled the other precept by presenting and offering Her Son to the Eternal Father. And when the days of Her purification were fulfilled according to the law of Moses, they took Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord [Lk. 2: 22]. But the Blessed Virgin did not offer Him as other mothers offered their sons. The others offered them to God, but they knew that this offering was a mere ceremonial fulfillment of the Law. By symbolically redeeming their children they made them truly their own, and they would not be obliged to sacrifice them to death at some other time. Mary, however, really offered Her Son to death. She knew for certain that the sacrifice of the life of Jesus which She was then making would actually be consummated on the altar of the cross. Because She loved Him so much, in offering the life of Her Son Mary actually sacrificed Her entire self to God.

Let us leave aside all other considerations that we might reflect on today and dwell only on the greatness of the sacrifice Mary made of Herself to God when She offered Him the life of Her Son. This will be the subject of our discourse.

The Eternal Father had already determined to save man who had fallen through sin, and to deliver him from eternal death. At the same time He willed that Divine justice should not be deprived of a worthy and fitting satisfaction. And so He did not spare the life of His Son Who had already become man to redeem men, but willed that He should pay with the utmost rigor the penalty which all men deserved. He who has not spared even His own Son, but has delivered Him for us all [Rom. 8: 32].

Sending Him to earth to become man, He gave Him a mother. He willed that this mother should be the Blessed Virgin. But since He willed that the Divine Word should not become Her Son before She had accepted Him by an express act of Her will, so He also willed that Jesus should not sacrifice His life for the salvation of mankind without the consent of Mary. The heart of the Mother was to be sacrificed along with the life of the Son.

St. Thomas teaches that the very office of motherhood gives mothers a special right over their children. [1] Thus, inasmuch as Jesus Himself was innocent and did not deserve punishment, it seemed only fitting that He should not be condemned to the Cross as a victim for the sins of the world without the consent of His Mother.

Now while Mary consented to His death from the moment that She became the Mother of Jesus, God nevertheless wished that She should make a solemn sacrifice of Herself in the Temple on this day by making a solemn offering of the life of Her Son. And it is because of this sacrifice that St. Epiphanius calls Mary a "priest." [2]

We begin to see now how much this sacrifice cost Mary in the way of sorrow, and what heroic virtue She had to practice in order to assent to the sentence of death passed on Her Son.

Imagine, for instance, Mary on the road to Jerusalem on the first Presentation Day. She hurries toward the place of sacrifice and holds the beloved Victim in Her arms. She enters the Temple, approaches the altar, and there, unassumingly, humbly and devoutly presents Him to the Most High. Meanwhile holy Simeon, who had been promised by God that he should not die without first having seen the expected Messias, takes the Divine Child from the hands of the Blessed Virgin and, inspired by the Holy Spirit, tells Her how much the sacrifice of Her Son will cost Her. He tells Her too that together with Him Her own blessed soul will also be sacrificed.

In a sermon on the Purification, St. Thomas of Villanova pictures the holy old man becoming troubled and silent at the thought of having to make such a gloomy prophecy. Then he pictures Mary asking: "Why are you troubled on such a happy day, Simeon?" "O royal Virgin," he replies, "I wish I did not have to give You such bitter news. But God wills it for Your greater merit. Listen then to what I have to say. This Child who is now such a joy to You------and how rightly so, O God------this Child will one day cause You such bitter grief as no other creature has ever experienced. You will see Him persecuted by men of all types and made a butt for their scoffing and outrages. They will even go so far as to put Him to death as a criminal before Your very eyes. You are most happy to have this Child, but I tell you that He will be a stumbling block to many, a sign of contradiction. After His death there will be many Martyrs who will be tortured and put to death for the love of Your Son. They will suffer Martyrdom in their bodies, but You, O holy Mother, will suffer it in Your heart."

Yes, Mary was to suffer in Her heart. Her compassion for Her most beloved Son was the sword which was destined to pierce Her motherly heart, as St. Simeon accurately foretold: And Thy own soul a sword shall pierce [Lk. 2: 35].
St. Jerome assures us that the Blessed Virgin was well versed in the Sacred Scriptures and therefore was aware what the Redeemer would have to suffer during His life, and even more at the time of His death. She fully understood from the Prophets that He was to be betrayed by one of His own disciples: Even My friend who had My trust and partook of My bread, has raised his heel against Me [Ps. 40, 10]. And that He would be abandoned by them: Strike the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered [Zach. 13: 7]. She knew all about the contempt, the spitting, the blows, the scorn that He would be made to suffer at the hands of the people: I have given My body to the strikers, and My cheeks to them that plucked them: I have not turned away My face from them that rebuked Me and that spit upon Me [Isa. 50: 6]. She knew that He was to become the reproach of the vilest men and the outcast of the people, and would be overwhelmed with insults and injuries: But I am a worm, not a man: the scorn of men, despised by the people [Ps. 21, 7]; He shall be filled with reproaches [Lam. 3: 30]. She knew also that at the end of His life His most sacred flesh would be tom and mangled by scourges: But He was wounded for our iniquities, He was bruised for our sins [Isa. 53 : 5]. She knew that His whole body would be disfigured and become like that of a leper------all wounds, with the bones exposed where they pierced the flesh: There is no beauty in Him nor comeliness . . . and we have thought Him, as it were, a leper [Isa. 53: 5]. They have numbered all His bones [Ps. 21, 18]. She knew that He was to be pierced by nails: They have pierced My hands and My feet [Ps. 21, 17]. And would be ranked with criminals: And He was reputed with the wicked [Isa. 53: 12]. And that finally, hanging on a Cross, He would die for the salvation of mankind: And they shall look upon Me, Whom they have pierced [Zach. 12: 10].

Mary, I say, was already well aware of all these tortures that Jesus would have to suffer, but Simeon's words, And Thy own soul a sword shall pierce, revealed to Her all the details of those sufferings, internal and external, that were to torment Him, as Our Lord Himself revealed to St. Teresa. [3] She consented to everything, however, with a steadfastness that filled even the Angels with astonishment. She pronounced the sentence that condemned Her Son to death------a death so ignominious and painful------when She said: "Eternal Father, since You will that it should be so, not My will, but Thine be done [Lk. 22: 42]. I unite My will to Your most holy will, and I sacrifice My Son to You. I am happy to have Him lose His life for Your glory and the salvation of the world. At the same time I sacrifice My heart to You so that it may be pierced with sorrow as much as You please. It is enough for Me, O My God, that You be glorified and content with My offering: Not My will, but Thine be done."

O immeasurable charity! O unparalleled constancy! O victory deserving the eternal admiration of Heaven and earth!

This explains why Mary was silent during the Passion of Jesus when He was being unjustly accused. She said nothing to Pilate who was somewhat inclined to set Him free, fully aware as She was of His innocence. She only appeared in public to be present at His great sacrifice which was to take place on Calvary. She accompanied Him to the place of execution. She was with Him from the fIrst moment He was nailed on the Cross: There stood by the Cross of Jesus, His Mother [Jn. 19: 25]. She stood there until She saw Him expire and the sacrifice was consummated. All this She did in order to complete the offering She had made of Him to God in the Temple.

To appreciate what this sacrifice meant to Mary it would be necessary to understand the love She had for Jesus. Generally speaking, the love of mothers is so great that when their children are about to die and there is danger of losing them, they forget all their faults and shortcomings. They even forget the injuries they may have received from them, and suffer unimaginable heartache. But many times the love of these mothers is a divided love, a love that extends to other children, or at least to other creatures. Mary had only one child------the most admirable ever born. He was most lovable, for He had everything to make Him so. He was most obedient, most virtuous, most innocent, most holy. In a word, He was God. And Mary's love stopped right there. It did not extend to any other created being. She concentrated all Her love on Her only Son. Nor was She afraid of going too far in loving Him. This Son was God and He deserved limitless love. This was the Son Who was at the same time the victim She was voluntarily sacrificing to death.

Let us then imagine how much it must have cost Mary, what strength of soul it must have taken, to perform this act which amounted to sacrificing the life of Her Son on the Cross. On the one hand, She was the most fortunate of all mothers because She was the Mother of God. On the other hand, She was at the same time the mother most to be pitied, the most sorrowful mother imaginable, because She was obliged to see Her Son destined for the Cross from the day He was born. What mother would accept a child knowing that she was destined to lose him later on by a disgraceful death, and knowing that she herself would be there and see him die? But Mary willingly accepted Her Son on these difficult terms. She not only accepted Him, but on this day offered Him to death with Her own hands, sacrificing Him to Divine justice.

St. Bonaventure says that the Blessed Virgin would have gladly agreed to suffer the pains and death of Her Son personally. But in order to obey God, She made the great offering of the life of Her Son Jesus, conquering the tender love She had for Him, but with an excess of grief.

"Had it been possible, She would willingly have endured all the torments of Her Son. But God willed that His only-begotten Son should be offered up for the salvation of the human race."

By this sacrifice Mary brought Herself more grief and was more generous than if She had offered to suffer in Her own person all that Her Son was to endure. That is why we may say that She surpassed all the Martyrs in generosity; for the Martyrs offered their own lives to God, but the Blessed Virgin offered the life of Her Son Whom She loved and esteemed infinitely more than Her own life.

The pain of this sorrowful sacrifice did not end here. This was actually only the beginning. For from that time on, during the whole life of Her Son, Mary had constantly before Her eyes the bitter death and all the torments He was to endure.

The more charming, gracious, and loving Her Son became, the more Her heart was filled with increasing anguish.

O sorrowful Mother, if You had loved Your Son less, or if He had been less lovable or had loved You less, Your sufferings would certainly not have been so great when You offered Him to death. But there never was, and never will be, a mother who loved her son more than You did. And there never was, and never will be, a son more lovable, or one who loved his mother more than Jesus did. O God, had we beheld the beauty, the majesty of the face of that Divine Child, would we ever have had the courage to sacrifice His life for our salvation? And yet You, O Mary, although You were His Mother and loved Him with such a tender love, had the courage to offer Him for the salvation of mankind, to a death more cruel and painful than any criminal ever suffered on earth!

How sad a scene must love have placed before the eyes of the Blessed Virgin from that day on, a scene in which all the outrages and mockeries which Her poor Son was to endure were delineated. See how love already represents Him agonized with sorrow in the garden, torn with scourges, crowned with thorns in the praetorium, and finally hanging on a Cross of shame on Calvary! "See, O Mother," says love, "what an amiable and innocent Son You are offering to such terrible tortures and to such a horrible death!" And what is the use of trying to save Him from the hands of Herod when You are only destining Him for a far more sorrowful fate?

Mary not only offered Jesus to death in the Temple, but She renewed that offering every moment of Her life. She revealed to St. Bridget: "That sorrow [foretold by the holy Simeon] never left My heart until I was assumed, body and soul, into Heaven." Therefore St. Anselm addresses Her in these words: "O compassionate Mother, I cannot believe that You could have endured such excruciating torments even for a moment without dying, unless God Himself, the Spirit of Life, had sustained You." But St. Bernard, in speaking of the great sorrow which Mary experienced on this day, says that from this time on "She endured a living death, bearing a sorrow more cruel than death." Every moment that She lived She died, for She was assailed at every moment by sorrow for the coming death of Her Jesus, a torment more cruel than any death.

Because of the immense merit She acquired for the salvation of the world by this great sacrifice to God, St. Augustine was quite right in calling the Blessed Mother the "repairer of the human race." And St. Epiphanius, "the redeemer of captives;" St. Germanus, "our deliverer from all calamities;" St. Ambrose, "the mother of all the faithful;" St. Augustine, "the mother of the living;" St. Andrew of Crete, "the mother of life."

Arnold of Chartres says: "The will of Mary and the will of Christ were then united so intimately that both offered up the same sacrifice. Because of that union of wills, Mary brought about with Christ that one effect, namely, the salvation of the world." Jesus accomplished it by making satisfaction for our sins; Mary by obtaining the application of this satisfaction to us . . .

Mary then, by the merit of Her sorrows and by sacrificing Her Son, became the Mother of all the redeemed, and it is only right to believe that it is through Her hands that the milk of Divine grace, the fruit of Christ's merits and the means for obtaining eternal life are given to men. St. Bernard refers to this when he says: "When God was about to redeem the human race, He deposited the whole price in Mary's hands." By this he meant that the merits of the Redeemer are applied to our souls through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin, for the graces which are the fruit of the merits of Jesus Christ are dispensed by Her hands.

Mater Castissima, by Martin Engelbrecht (1684-1756)If God was so pleased by the sacrifice of his son Isaac which Abraham was to make to the Divine Majesty that He promised to multiply Abraham's descendants as the stars of the heavens------Because thou hast done this thing, and hast not spared thy only-begotten son for My sake, I will bless thee, and I will multiply thy seed as the stars of Heaven [Gen. 22: 16-17]------ we must surely believe that the far nobler sacrifice of Her Son Jesus which Mary made was immeasurably more acceptable to God. And as a result, He has granted that by Her prayers the number of the elect should be increased. That is, the number of souls coming to Heaven through Her shall be great.

God promised St. Simeon that he would not die until he had seen the birth of the Messias: And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord [Lk. 2: 26]. But it was only through Mary that he received this grace, for it was in Her arms that he found the Savior. So we may say that anyone who wants to find Jesus will find Him only through Mary. Let us therefore go to this holy Mother if we wish to find Jesus, and let us go with great confidence.

Mary told Her servant Pudenziana Zagnoni that every year on the feast of Her Purification [February 2] some sinner would receive a great grace.

Who knows but that you or I may be the favored sinner this day? Our sins may be great but the power of Mary is still greater. "The Son can deny nothing to His Mother," says St. Bernard. If Jesus is angry with us, Mary will immediately placate Him. Plutarch reports that Antipater wrote a long letter to Alexander the Great denouncing Alexander's mother, Olympia. After reading the letter, Alexander observed: "Antipater does not know that a single tear of my mother is enough to cancel six hundred letters of denunciation." We may also imagine Jesus giving the same answer to any denunciations made against us by the devil when we have Mary praying for us: "Does Lucifer not know that a prayer of My Mother in favor of a sinner is enough to make Me forget all the accusations against him?"  --- taken from  the Church Doctor's writings of St.  Alphonsus Liguori from his "The Glores of Mary"

Day 7: Mother Most Pure

 +JMJ+

On the Devotion of the Three Hail Marys:

This devotion was revealed by our Blessed Mother Herself to the Benedictine mystic, St. Mechtilde. In the Book of Revelations of St. Mechtilde we read:
"While Mechtilde was beseeching the glorious Virgin to assist her in her hour of death, Our Lady appeared to her and said: 'I will certainly. But I also want you to say three special Hail Mary's to me every day.
'The first will be in honor of God the Father, Whose omnipotence raised my soul so high above every other creature that, after God, I have the greatest power in Heaven and on earth. In the hour of your death, I will use that power of God the Father to keep any hostile power far from you.
'The second Hail Mary will be said in honor of the Son of God, Who communicated His inscrutable wisdom to me. In the hour of your death, I will fill your soul with the light of that wisdom, so that all the darkness of ignorance and error will be dispelled.
'The third Hail Mary will be in honor of God the Holy Ghost, Who filled my soul with the sweetness of His love and tenderness and mercy. In your last hour, I will then change the bitterness of death into divine sweetness and delight."
The secretary who wrote down the revelations of St. Mechtilde at her dictation was St. Gertrude the Great. She was present when St. Mechtilde died and saw Our Lord appearing to her. Later, many revelations regarding the Three Hail Mary Devotion were revealed to her also.
On the Feast of the Annunciation, 1299, when the Ave Maria was being sung in chapel during Matins, St. Gertrude saw a vision of three bright flames emanating from each of the Three Divine Persons, which penetrated the Heart of the Holy Virgin, like three rays. She was given to understand that the three brilliant streams were symbols that: "After the Power of the Father, the Wisdom of the Son, and the merciful Tenderness of the Holy Ghost, nothing approaches the Power, the Wisdom, and the merciful Tenderness of Mary."

In a vision of Our Lady to St. Gertrude:
"To any soul who faithfully prays the Three Hail Mary's, I will appear at the hour of death in a splendor so extraordinary that it will fill the soul with heavenly consolation."

Day 6: Mother of Divine Grace

 +JMJ+

As the Angel Gabriel proclaimed rightly, "Hail Mary, FULL of GRACE," every soul would do well to give himself to your care, dearest Mother.  Not only were you united to Christ for the 9 months before his birth, but also for the 33 years of his life having taken the flesh of man united to his divine nature.  You inspire by your command to the servants to "Do whatever he tells you," but also in the mystical reality resulting from your continued intercession by the means of your prayers.  This is because you never refuse to pray for what good things a soul requests that they may please your son.  Your intercession proves always especially favored by God, inspiring strength and will in the smallest, daily tasks to the most challenging calls in manhood.  Even our Lord, who was not in need of grace, promptly began his public ministry at your request on behalf of those at the marriage feast of Cana, servants of God benefit from your intercession,  by continued miracles of graces given to them by God won by your prayers. Proof of God's favor of you continues by how He answers your prayers on the behalf of souls, as you take on as your own children, even the most hardened sinners, converting their hearts and and minds to holy obedience.

Day 5: Mother of Mercy

"BEHOLD, oh mother of God, at thy feet a miserable sinner, the slave of hell, who has recourse to thee, and trusts in thee. I do not even merit that thou should'st look upon me, but I know that having seen thy Son die to save sinners, thou hast the greatest desire to aid them. Oh mother of mercy, look on my miseries, and have pity on me. I hear thee called by all: The refuge of sinners, the hope of the desperate, the help of the abandoned. Then thou art my refuge, my hope, my help. Thou must save me by thy intercession. Succor me for the love of Jesus Christ, give thy hand to a poor fallen sinner who recommends himself to thee. I know that thou dost find consolation in helping the sinner when thou canst; help me then, for thou help me. I, by my sins have lost the grace of God and my own soul, I place myself in thy hands; tell me what I must do to return to the favor of my Lord, for I will do it, without delay. He sends me to thee, that thou mayest succor me, and he wishes me to have recourse to thy mercy, that not only the merits of thy Son, but also thy prayers may aid in my salvation. To thee then I have recourse; thou who dost pray for so many others, pray also to Jesus for me. Ask him to pardon me, and he will pardon me; tell him that thon dost desire my salvation, and he will save me. Make known the good that thou canst do to those who confide in
thee. Amen; thus I hope, thus may it be."  --- St. Alphonsus Liguori

“No matter how numerous a person’s sins may be, if he turns to me with a sincere purpose of amendment, I am prepared forthwith to receive him graciously, for I do not regard the number of sins he has committed, but look only upon the dispositions with which he comes to me; for I feel no aversion. in healing his wounds, because I am called and am in truth the Mother of Mercy.” – Our Lady to St. Bridget

The Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.

Amen.

Day 4: Mother of the Church

 +JMJ+

Your commission did not end with your maternity to Christ, but as your mystical Spouse, the Holy Ghost, leads the Church, you too, spiritually adopt children and lead them to Christ through the Sacraments of the Church.  It is by the Sacraments, namely Christ in the Holy Sacrament of the Altar, that the validly baptized, the ability to conquer sin.  Your son has become food for souls in a state of grace, giving them the ability to remain and grow in grace.

God the Father chose to have His Son be brought into the world by your 'fiat', so now you are not only an example of holy obedience, but the single, greatest advocate to those  who truly wish to follow him.  For our Lord said, "He who says he loves me yet fails to keep the commandments, is a liar and the truth is not in him." And he says, "Unless you eat of my body,  you do not have life in you," just as the body must consume earthly food in order to thrive.

Day 3: Mother of Christ

Bernardino Luini

 +JMJ+

Dear Mother of Christ,
You are the single greatest creature of all of God the Father's creation.  We cannot truly love Christ, without having due affection and honor to you, his holy mother.

Please petition to your son  that  we will grow in reverence for you, as we will then surely be brought closer to him.

Amen.

Day 2: Holy Virgin of Virgins

 +JMJ+

Dearest Mother of God,
You are, of all the consecrated virgin, the most holy..  Your only passions are to love and to serve God in all three Person:  to fulfil His Holy Will at any cost, as His most humble handmaid, as you were chosen to be the spouse of the Holy Ghost and the Mother of God the Son.  For this you were born, and by your free will, and the wholly intact grace, you wanted nothing but His Will and by this, to save souls in His honor.  By the mysterious will of God, He wishes that we have a mystical advocate, the Advocate of All Advocates, holding nothing back for the greatest good of souls who are fortunate to have learned of your kindness and modesty.  Yet, let no one think, that in your meekness, you are at all weak, or in your departure from this world, you are less available, less present.  Dearest Mother, warm the hardest hearts who dare to come to you and who request your guidance, and continue to bring souls to your Son, and ordering sinners' hearts and understanding by the Power of Your Holy Spouse.

Most Holy Virgin, your spiritual maternity is as undeniable as your maternity of Christ, for even today your power from Heaven only gives further testimony to both Christ as God the Son and to the existence of Heaven.

Be my advocate at all times, dearest Holy Mother, that I may bless God in this life and then bring me one day to Heaven.

Day 1 : Holy Mother of God

"Blessed are the paps that gave Thee suck."

"Yea, rather, blessed are those that hear the word and keep it."

[27] And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman from the crowd, lifting up her voice, said to him: Blessed is the womb that bore thee, and the paps that gave thee suck. [28] But he said: Yea rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God, and keep it." -- Luke 11:27-28

Dear Mother of God,
Chosen by God the Father to be the sacred instrument by which He chose to have his only son take on human flesh and b e brought into the world, you gave birth to God the Son.  In his person. Christ is God and not man, but he has two natures hypostatically united: one divine, one human.  We ought to always keep before our minds that you have the highest dignity of any human creature, and are, therefore, by your "Fiat!" to God's design, you ought to be both our greatest, Christian role model and advocate.

Spouse of the Holy Ghost, pray for us.  Be our advocate in all our needs, but especially that we may grow in holy obedience as you remind the servants at the Wedding Feast of Cana to, "Do whatever he tells you."
